Blue Me Down
This body of work is from a residency I ran in Wales with some somatic dancers in 2020. I created abstract line drawings, in pencil and in ink, of the landscape and of the surrounding rock formations. I made the drawings and then gave them to the dancers, the dancers then danced the drawings back into the landscape. Back in London, I gave the drawings to non-dancers for them to interpret the line in their own way
As part of this project I also created a large series of landscape watercolour paintings. The waterieness of these paintings is very important. In them, I am looking at the weather and the sky that constantly changes. The landscape shapes stay the same as the weather changes around them. Throughout the series the landscape becomes increasingly simplified as the sky becomes more dominant. I am working to distil the essence of the environment. In creating these paintings I was thinking of the watercolours of Anselm Kiefer and Per Kirkeby,
Blue Me Down, St Bride’s Bay, 2022, watercolour on paper
Two women outdoors near water, with papers and drawings on the ground, one standing and the other kneeling, both wearing warm clothing and hats.
Two people, one woman and one man, standing on a grassy hill with a coast and cliffs in the background. The woman is barefoot, wearing a blue coat and a gray knit hat with a pom-pom, holding a piece of paper. The man is wearing a brown hooded jacket, looking down at scattered pieces of paper with abstract black line drawings on them.
Several pieces of paper with black ink abstract line drawings of trees are spread out on a grassy lawn. Two people are kneeling or sitting nearby, one with bare feet and another with shoes visible.
An art display with a large white wall featuring 20 small abstract paintings in blue ink, arranged in a grid pattern. In the foreground, white decorative figures resembling animals and objects are seen on the floor, with a can of paint nearby.
A person sitting on grass with tiles featuring black abstract line drawings of trees or branches arranged in front of them, and another person standing nearby with a sock on their foot.
